Edwards students compete in Student Conference on Operations

Ten students from the Edwards School of Business competed in the Student Conference on Operations in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday April 10th, 2015.

The ten students representing Edwards’ COMM 494 (Field Investigation in Operations Management) presented on three projects and impressed the judges with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

“I was among the 5-person judging team and I can attest to the challenge of identifying competition winners among the 12 truly rewarding student projects” explained Associate Dean, Keith Willoughby. “We earmarked 30 minutes for our decision time, but spent over an hour in deliberations.”

Rebecca Olbort and Ross Gadzella presented on process improvement opportunities in long-term care, while Alex Archer, Carly Wuschenny, Alan Ly, and Colin Closter presented several practical approaches for streamlining healthcare orientation costs. The third presentation team consisting of Michelle Lavoie, Chris Chovin, Cody Closter, and Rory Nussbaumer garnered the prestigious “Most Innovative Project” award at the competition with their inspiring work on analyzing and improving Saskatoon Food Bank hamper distribution systems.

The students of the Operations Management Student Association have expressed interest in possibly hosting this event some day in the future which would save Edwards students the long trip to and from Edmonton.

“Despite the rigors of a long vehicle trip to and from Edmonton, the students brought their “A game” to the competition and I was thrilled with their presentations” mentioned Willoughby.
